Science stimulates and excites pupils' curiosity about the world. Through working scientifically, pupils observe, measure, classify, investigate and communicate scientific ideas â building a coherent knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics.
Identify and name wild and garden plants; structure of flowering plants; evergreen vs deciduous trees.
Years 1â2Name common animals; classify as fish, amphibian, reptile, bird or mammal; 5 senses; basic body parts.
Years 1â2Identify materials and their properties â hard, soft, waterproof, transparent, opaque, flexible.
Year 1Living/dead/never alive; habitats and micro-habitats; food chains; how animals are suited to their habitat.
Year 2Functions of roots, stem, leaves and flowers; photosynthesis; water transport; pollination and seed dispersal.
Year 3Nutrition; skeletons for support and movement; muscles; digestion; types of teeth.
Years 3â4Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks; fossils; soil composition and fertility.
Year 3Simple series circuits; conductors and insulators; switches; effect of adding cells; circuit diagrams.
Year 4The solar system; Earth's rotation; day and night; the Moon; heliocentric model.
Year 5Life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds; metamorphosis; reproduction in plants and animals.
